Sarah Records

Sarah Records was a UK independent record label active between 1987 and 1995,[1] best known for its recordings of twee pop.
The label was formed in Bristol in 1987 by Clare Wadd and Matt Haynes, and grew out of the fanzine scene at the time, Haynes having previously edited Are You Scared To Get Happy?,[2] and Wadd Kvatch. Both these fanzines had given away flexidiscs - indeed, AYSTGH had been part of the Sha-la-la organisation, a record label set up solely to produce flexidiscs. Several Sarah releases were fanzines and flexi-discs, as it was felt this summed up the aesthetic of the label better than 12" singles and albums.[2]
Sarah Records was usually seen as being grounded in the C86 janglyindie-pop sensibility, though the late Seventies DIY scene and independent yet stylish and imaginative labels such as Postcard Records, Factory and Creation, plus the mid-Eighties fanzine culture, were bigger influences. It ceased operation with the release of There and Back Again Lane, the hundredth release in the main catalogue sequence - a booklet telling the story of the label, along with a CD of representative tracks. Half-page adverts entitled "A Day For Destroying Things" in both NME and Melody Maker marked the release. "We don't do encores", the advert announced, and the label has stuck by this sentiment, with no further releases. Bands on the label included Heavenly, East River Pipe, The Orchids,Even As We Speak, Boyracer, Brighter, Blueboy, The Field Mice, Another Sunny Day and St. Christopher.
Haynes subsequently established Shinkansen Recordings, where many Sarah artists went on to record; he now edits a zine, Smoke, dedicated to writing and art inspired by London.

Records That Don't Do Much But Are Still Amazing Part 1
Omar S is yet another house/techno talent to burst out of underground Detroit. Similar in style and attitude to Theo Parrish his music is rough, raw and 100% independent. He releases and distributes his music from his basement studio on his own label FXHE. His earlier releases all came with hand written labels until it started taking up too much of his time.
Omar S - Oasis 1
Oasis 1 was released in 2004 and originally past me by. On listening to it you will understand why. Little more than a raw beat with spooky synths and what sounds like people bashing sheet metal over the top. Thats all, but given time it really gets into your head. Good shit.
The track was taken from the latest Fabric mix Omar S - Detroit, a mix of his productions and great introduction to the man. More info here

Beyond The Wizards Sleeve

Beyond the Wizards Sleeve is a collaboration between Trash supremo and indie kids DJ of choice Erol Alkan, and Richard Norris ex of The Grid. They first came to my attention when i heard their re-animation (as they call them) of Promises by Badly Drawn Boy on a Jazzanova mix. I'd never heard the original of this track as i lost interest in Badly Drawn Boy many years ago but this mix is lovely stuff, kind of late 80's/early 90's mid tempo piano house. Proper 5am tackle.
Badly Drawn Boy - Promises (Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve Re-Animation)
Since hearing that i've been out and bought their Re-Animations cd, a 12 track compilation of their remixes to date. I'm not loving it all at the minute TBO but its early days. What i am loving though is their re-animation of Roscoe by Midlake. The original of this track is one of my favourites from recent years, so i was a little worried it could be ruined. I shouldn't have worried as what they've done is just add to beauty of the original. Dare i say bettering it!?

The Drones

The Drones - The Minotaur
I finally got round to checking this band at the weekend and it was well worth the effort. I had no idea what to expect but i definitely wasn't expecting anything this good. The first track on their Myspace was this single from their 4th lp Havilah. This is intense nasty stuff with huge guitars and i can't stop playing it over and over and over....
The new lp is out now on ATP records with a free download code.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

I have to confess to being an unashamed lover of indie/noise pop. This band were introduced to me recently by the excellent Guardian music podcast, when they played superbly titled This Love Is Fucking Right. Since then i have delved deeper and found this gem of a song. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart are being touted as part of a New York C86 revival scene alongside bands like Crystal Stilts & the Vivian Girls. I don't care about that. This is pure Sunny Sundae Smile era My Bloody Valentine played with a youthful exuberance and energy which makes it sound fresh and relevant. Pity the band name is a fucker to remember.
Their self titled lp is available now on Fortuna Pop. Buy it here

I'm a rare individual, young and I'm bossy

Seeing as this is the first post i thought i'd start with the track that inspired the name of this blog. I first heard it many years ago on Giles Peterson's Worldwide show and then spent ages trying to track down a copy. I finally found a booty copy in the now defunct BPM records in Derby. Its one of Mary J's finest tracks with a great verse from a young and bossy Nas.
